The client loved the authenticity and charm of the existing small residence, but he, no longer a bachelor, and his wife, with a growing family in the works needed more space, particularly a larger kitchen and bath. He wanted to preserve as much of the original character of the house as possible.  She hoped for something more modern: keep it minimal and as light as possible.  The solution was to combine these somewhat divergent requests by keeping the front portion of the house closer to the original character and then transitioning toward the rear to more modern.  By removing a clutter of walls, extending the master bedroom and adding a sun room in the rear,  light was allowed to flow in while allowing for unobstructed views and movement throughout  from the entry on through the length of the house and beyond to the rear garden.
